Thursday at Shiloh

Ross worked Tuesday and Wednesday as well and then took off on Thursday so we could all go to the Shiloh National Military Park together.  This was Caleb and my favorite outing.  As we drove there, I read a book from the library about the Battle of Shiloh.  It was neat to then immediately see the places we had read about: Pittsburg Landing, Shiloh Church, the Bloody Pond, and the Peach Orchard. It started downpouring while we were there, so we didn't make the hike into the Hornet's Nest.  But Grandpa and Ross did take the kids on a soaking wet, guided tour of the National Cemetery.  (I nursed Ezra in the car and Mom kept me company) The kids did really well and earned their Junior Ranger badges! The Park also has a protected area where a bald eagle family lays eggs each year.  We were able to see the eaglet in the nest.

We then went to The Catfish Hotel for lunch.  The kids enjoyed playing in the hut where the founding family first fished and looking out over the Tennessee River.

  1. The Park Ranger who led the tour was terrific! Even a non-history lover would be moved by all we saw, and I was in 7th heaven! What a remarkable place!
